Sopho's Hall Of Fame.
The duo will be the 6th Eurovision entrants for the country and the 7th that were selected to sing for Georgia (the 2009 entry was withdrawn). If you count Ǝldrine's lead singer Sopho Toroshelidze it's the 4th time Georgia sends a Sopho, which is remarkable.
Sopho Khalvashi's Visionary Dream, Georgia's debut entry, ended 12th in Helsinki.
Sophia Nizharadze (who is actually called Sopho, really) ended 9th in 2010 and Ǝldrine, with their new lead Sopho also ended 9th. Ǝldrine actually had a different singer (Taka Vadachkoria) in the National Final, but she wasn't named Sopho, so she had to go.

Empirija
Pred Da Se Razdeni was the second song chosen for Macedonia's Eurovision adventure.
The first song Empirija (Империја,Empire) written by Simeon Atanasov, Dejan Momiroski with lyrics by Borce Nekovski was withdrawn for a host of reasons.
Allegedly experts and the Macedonian public were not happy. Skopje 2014, The location where the clip was shot was is political hotbed and some Greeks seem to be offended too in some historic way (sigh...), and there was something about Alexander the Great too. The original video was removed from official sources but if you do a search at Youtube you can still find the original song.
After first considering just making changes to Empirija, MKRTV and Esma and Lozano opted for a new song.
The original working title for Empirija was Опсесија (Obsesija, Obsession). It was also reported at an early stage that song was to be in English but the only released version was in Macedonian.

Malo Malo
Esma Redžepova Teodosievska has tried to get to Eurovision before.
In 1971 her song Malo Malo (Little by little) was entered for the Yugoslavian final by TV Beograd (Serbian TV) and ended 3rd.

In 2006 Ljubov E (Love is), a duet with Adrian Gaxha ended 2nd in the Macedonian final. Gaxha himself entered for Macedonia in 2008 with a bunch of other people.

When The Road Bends
The 2007 movie When The Road Bends - Tales Of A Gypsy Caravan, features Esma and the Teodosievski Ensemble feature along with Gypsy ensembles from Romania, India and Spain. They are followed on their U.S. tour. The movie gives an fascinating insight of the Gypsy culture and the important role of music in their life.
When The Road Bends website.

Vlatko Lozanoski also tried in the Macedonian selection. In 2009 Blisku Do Mene (Close to me) ended 4th and in 2010 Letam Kon Tebe (Only with you) did the same.

Murmansk born singer Zlata Ognevich participated in the 2011 Ukraine selection with the song Tiny Island and ended 5th.
In 2011 her song Kukushka (The cuckoo) ended 2nd in the heavily contested Ukrainian final.

The Giant
Ukraine hardly ever lets us down in the prop departement. Whips, Chains, Hell Machine, Sandlady and Verka Serduchka. This year they come up with a giant. The giant in the narration of Gravity is portrayed by Ukrainian born American Igor Vovkovinskiy.
At 2.35 or 2.43 he's officialy the tallest man living in the U.S.A. and made the news by wearing a t-shirt reading The Worlds Biggest Obama Supporter.
He's not the tallest Ukrainian in the world though, that honour goes to Leonid Stadnyk. He's reportedly 2 meters 57 cm, but it is not official as he wasn't measured by the Guinnes Book Of Records.
Think of it what you will, Ukraine's Gravity show will be talked about.

Belarus - Solayoh - Alyona Lanskaya

16 - 48 pts / 7 - 64 pts in semi 1

Rhythm Of Love by Alyona Lanskaya  (Алёна Ланская) won the Belorussian selection on December 7 2012. But in true Belorussian fashion a new song has been chosen.
Solayoh is a song written by Marc Paelinck from Belgium and Martin King from the U.K..
Alyona is Belarus' 10th Eurovision entrant.

Solayoh is available at iTunes in original and karaoke versions.
If you just want to listen go here at BTRC

A remix EP has been released on iTunes and Amazon, see versions below.

Solayoh is not a new song, it has been on King and Paelincks MySpace for a few years already (as Soleo), but EBU have eased the rules about songs being published (some crap about not having any profit from the early publishing).
The composers have deleted the original song, but stated their account had been hacked.

Marc Paelinck also wrote the Belgian entry of 2002 (Sister by Sergio and the ladies and co-wrote the 2004 entry with his brother Dirk (1 Life by Xandee).

Alyona's Facebook had a competition to write Belorussian lyrics for Solayoh.

An early 1 track promo has been issued.
For Malmö a bunch of goodies were made. A a cdrom  with the six remixes and the English, Russian and instrumental versions of Solayoh. (wave and mp3 files). (2 different discs, but with the same content)
Beware: Fakes are being offered on e-bay
The promo pack also includes a usb card with the exact same files.
The Belorussion version doesn't seem to have materialized yet, even though there was a competition to write the lyrics.

Amazon offers two cdsingles for sale, but they are in fact cd-r's made by request.  Source is undisclosed, better burn one yourself and save some money.

Solayoh - The Album
Alyona Lanskaya's new album is out now (November), The album is titled Solayoh.
In Belarus the CD is in the shop. The disc also includes a videoclip of Solayoh.
For the rest of the world (or at least some parts of it) the album is available at iTunes. There's 15 tracks plus four extra versions of Solayoh. (Marked * in versions list above)
You can listen to the tracks at Alyona's Soundcloud or at her Facebook (november 14 entry has a player).
All songs are in English. You'll also find Rhythm Of Love and 2012 contender All My Life.

Rhythm Of Love
Original National Final winner Rhythm Of Love is written by Leonid Shirin, Yuri Vashchuk and Alexey Shirin.
You can listen to the song here at BTRC or watch the official video here at Alyona's Youtube

Alyona Lanskaya already won the 2012 Eurofest selection with the song All My Life, but she got lost on the way to Baku only to find Litesound on the Eurovision stage.
(Read more about that here at the Baku Collection)

The Rhythm Of Love composers also have been unlucky in the past. They missed out with Alyona last year and they also wrote NF winner Far Away by 3+2 which was replaced by the song Butterflies they didn't write (2010). Now it's the third time thay are stabbed in the back, not very nice.
Update 2014: Composer Yuri Vashchuck won the 2014 Belarus selection (he's Teo). Let's see if it holds this time.

You can listen to the songs from the national final including Rhythm Of Love here at BTRC.

Coverversion
A coverversion was made by Henry's Feesjuh and Beat Crooks ft Jude. Birds - Hardstyle Remix was released through Yellowcab records in April (digital) and is available at Zazell, MegaMedia and possibly other sources.
Listen at Beat Crooks Youtube.

NL/BE chart rivalry
Birds enters the Belgian Flemish charts at #12, which would not seem unusual given the recent trackrecord of NL-BE neighbourly voting, but the last time a Dutch entry scored a minor hit in Belgium was in 1988 (Gerard Joling # 15) before that you'll have to go back to 1976 (Sandra Reemer # 10 hit). Ding A Dong by Teach In scored a #2 hit in 1975.
It probably helps that the Belgians already know Anouk, Birds is her 15th hit. , The other way round is even worse. Only the 1986 winner J'Aime La Vie (Sandra Kim) and 1991's Geef Het Op by the already popular hugely Clouseau scored a top 40 hit in the Netherlands.
Update: Love Kills, the Belgian 2013 entry enters the Dutch sales top 100 at 71.

Anouk (Anouk Teeuwe) has been a popular singer in the Netherlands (and to a certain extent, Belgium) ever since her first hit, scoring about 30 chart hits with 12 going top 10.
Her first and until now only #1 was Three Days In A Row from 2009.

Internationally Anouk is probably best known for her hit Nobody's Wife from 1997 which was a top 10 hit in Belgium, Sweden, France, Finland, Denmark and Norway and also charted in France and Germany..
Her 2004 song Lost was a #2 hit in Norway in 2008 and a #3 hit in Denmark early 2012 after another singer performed it in a talent show.

Anouks most recent album is To Get Her Together from 2011, the title being a wordplay on her debut album Together Alone.
* She released nine studio albums, two live albums and Lost Tracks, a CD/DVD compilation of previously unreleased material, radio recording and videoclips. Several albums have been re-released with bonus material and/or extra discs.

Off with those uniforms!
EBU have decided that the name Heilsarmee and the uniforms are against the rules of Eurovision participation. (the bit about not allowing political, religious and commercial messages).
The band has agreed  to perform in other gear and change their name. One statement: "The band didn't really have a name anyway". Another: "If they change the rules again we're out"
The new bandname is Takasa, said to be Swahili for cleansing but also short for The Artists Known As Salvation Army. They also shot a new video.

2013: The Swiss Selection
The Swiss were the first to have songs available to hear for the Malmö Eurovision selection and the second to pick their entry.

The Finalists
You can still listen to the he 9 finalists here at Glanz Und Gloria.
The finalists came from several regional selection, more info and links below.

SF
Here is the place to go to listen to the songs uploaded to the SF selection.
Please note, this selection is only from SF (the German language broadcaster).

RSI
The Italian broadcaster RSI has also uploaded the songs for their regional selection.
You can listen to all seven here.
Only one name we know, Chiara Dubey, with the same song as entered in the SF selection (see below).
Two songs were chosen to proceed to the Swiss final. Chiara Dubey's Bella Sera and Catch Me by Ally.
Last years winner Sinplus was from the selection of Italian lanuage broadcaster RSI.

RTS
RTS (The French language broadcaster) have presented their three songs for the Swiss final. You can listen to them here.

Some remarkable entries from the SF selection:
Here are a few entries and artists in the SF selection that caught my eye / ear.

Lys Assia and NewJack
It's here, the new attempt from the first ever Eurovision winner Lys Assia. This time she roped in some streed cred rap persons NewJack to complement All In Your Head. Check it out here.
Lys Assia had two songs in the 1956 contest: Das Alte Karussell and Refrain and the latter was declared the winner.
In 1957 her song L'Enfant Que J'Etais didn't fare as well and ended only 8th. In 1958 Assia finished second with the most evergreen-ish song by her: Giorgio.
In the 2012 season (actually december 2011) she reached the Swiss national final with C'Etait Ma Vie and eventually ended 8th.

Dutch ex-Topper (Eurovision 2009) Gordon also wants a slice of the Swiss gateau. His current musical outfit LA The Voices had a three song pre-pre-pre thingy in the Netherlands to decide which song to upload to the SF selection.
Wild White Horses won, but they also sent in the runner up Change Is Gonna Come .
Another Dutchie is Eric Dikeb who was one of the creators behind the 2003 Dutch finalist / piss take Blue Skies Are For Free (7th). His Swiss attempt is Mesmerizing Glances.

Magdalena Tul didn't get out of the Eurovision semi's in 2011 when she sang the quite excellent Jestem for Poland. Her song for Switzerland 2013 is Give It Up.

Chiara Dubey was third in last years Swiss final with Anima Nuova, this time she tries again with Bella Sera. Update: Chiara already won her place in the Swiss final through the RSI selection.

Another song worth checking out is Sultan Hagavik by Männerchor steili Kressä. I don't know what they were on, but it's a funny tribute to one of Swedens most known franchises. And of course it breaks the rules!

Mariella Farré
A Swiss Eurovision star among the fold is Mariella Farré.  She entered twice for Switserland: Io Cosi Non Ci Sto (15th in 1983) and Piano Piano (with Pino Gasparini) was 12th two years later.
Her song is titled One Of A Kind and you can check it out here.
The song by Farré with Pasquale Ricamato M'innamoro De Ti, has been withdrawn from the selection.

Man Meadow are a Swedish duo (Fredrik Olofsson and Niklas Vestberg) who have participated in the Polish national final on two occasions. Viva La Musica was shared 3rd in 2008 and Love Is Gonna Get You was 6th in 2009. Now they try in Switzerland with How Does It Feel.

Virginia Trujullo has two songs. She ended 5th in the Spanish selection in 2009 with True Love. Avid Eurovision followers know her as the demo singer of several entries written by her brother Rafael Artesero Herrero. (English demo of Spain 2011, Andorra 2005, 2006 and also 2007 pre-song Ley Le Lee). Her songs for Switzerland are Power and Original Sin. My guess is that bro Rafael wrote these songs too, but I haven't found any details to confirm that yet.

Salvation
Almost 40 years after Olivia Newton John's tribute to the Sally Ann Band, Heilsarmee,  the Swiss Salvation Army are having a go. Their song You And Me is actually quite catchy and nothing like the bell ringing christmas pot chanting. I would be surprised if this didn't make it to the final in Switzerland.

Also Jam Sherrif is trying again in Switzerland. He did before but his best known effort is probably the 2005 Russian NF song No More War which won one of the semi's in Russia. In 2008 he entered the Russian final with Who Am I Without Your Love (with Pier Narciss)

Max And The Ducks and Konichiwa Panda have the best names. My Body Has Legs has one of my favorite tunes, Flagstaff Paradise, going all 80's retro on us.

There's also Deuce, but don't wet your pants, it's not THE Deuce.

I Still Remember by Constantinos Christoforou. (Κωνσταντίνος Χριστοφόρου)
Eurovision fans already know Constantinos from three entries for Cyprus. There was Mono Yia Mas in 1996 (9th place) and Ela Ela (Come Baby) in 2005 (18th).
And his best result was the 2003 entry Gimme (6th) by Manboy Band One of which Constantinos was the lead singer.
Oh well, it's withdrawn from the competition
